In a desire to make camp a safe and welcome place for all, Michi-Lu-Ca introduces a “Peanut Allergen Free” summer environment.  Because our attending guests, staff, and adult leaders are so numerous and varied we cannot guarantee a completely Peanut Free facility.  However, we can promise to strive for near total elimination of any peanut proteins from Camp through the steps and protocols described below.

We will eliminate peanuts and peanut products from our camp stores and camp kitchen all year round. We have already stopped purchasing such items and will use up any remaining stock by April of 2010.   Following April 2010, any peanut based food items in our camp store or kitchen will be removed from camp and we will no longer stock such items.  However, we will continue to serve products like Chocolate that may have been made in factories that processed peanuts for other food items.  We will replace previous peanut menu items with a suitable substitute.  For example we will replace our “Peanut Butter” with a Soynut Buter.

We will train all Michi-Lu-Ca staff about the issues related to Peanut Allergies and what foods not to bring to our facility.  We expect this education will eliminate any conscious decisions by our 30+ staff members to bring peanut based items to camp.  We recognize that our staff are only human and that the occasional mistake may happen, so we will continue our practice of allowing staff’s personal food in areas restricted to staff only.

Each week we will train any new adult leaders or volunteers or any person having the ability to go and come from camp throughout the week about our being a Peanut Free facility.   We will educate them about what foods not to bring back to camp or to distribute among their campers.  We recognize that our Pastors, Adult Leaders, and Volunteers are also only human and that the occasional mistake may happen, so we will continue our practice of providing an area in the Tri-Level building for the storage of their personal food items.  The Tri-Level building is only used by campers during our biggest weeks and then only once a day for 2 Bible Study groups of 10 or less each.

Risks that remain:
The biggest risk remaining will come in the form of human error by an attending Staff Member, Adult Leader, Pastor, or Volunteer who inadvertently may bring a food containing a peanut allergen to camp.

Smaller risks will include during registration and check out times when family and friends of campers are dropping off or picking up campers.  These times are short and limited, but the risk of a parent, friend, or camper eating a peanut based item before coming to Michi-Lu-Ca and then passing the proteins on via touch does remain.

In the event of an Allergic Reaction:
Campers are provided a pouch for carrying their personal Epi-pen (provided from home and via prescription).  Our staff try to ensure that campers have their Epi-pens with them at all times.  If a reaction occurs necessitating the use of an Epi-pen, we will call for an ambulance immediately upon administering the Epi-pen and will send the camper to the hospital for evaluation by Ambulance or camp or adult leader vehicles depending on the assessment of the camp Health Officer and the Ambulance EMTs.  Ambulance service requires a minimum of 15 minutes to get to our facility.  If you or your child has a sever allergy, please call us so that we can prearrange a faster meeting location with the ambulance in the unlikely event of an allergic reaction.
